Cholinesterase (BChE, EC 3.1.1.8) is an esterase that acts on a variety of choline esters and few other compounds, several of which serve as neurotransmitters. Because BChE is relatively abundant in plasma (about 3 mg/liter), the enzyme is also called plasma cholinesterase.

Recombinant and plasma-purified hBChEs are in Clinical Phase I as the first stoichiometric bioscavengers for the pretreatment of acetylcholinesterase intoxication.
