The pathogens involved are diverse, including viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi, and protozoa. Among these, bacterial infections are the most severe, particularly those caused by opportunistic pathogens like Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio cholerae, and Vibrio vulnificus. These bacteria cause mass mortality in aquatic organisms through various virulence factors, such as enterotoxins, hemolysins, extracellular proteases, exopolysaccharides, biofilms, and outer membrane proteins (e.g., iron uptake proteins and secretion systems).
