Q: What are some commonly used enzymes and their specific applications in diagnosis and bioanalysis?

A: The most commonly used enzymes for diagnosis and bioanalysis include the followings:

  1. Amylase, a starch-digesting enzyme that originates mainly from the pancreas and salivary glands; its serum activity is usually elevated in the early stages of acute inflammation of the pancreas, in obstruction of the pancreatic duct, and in mumps.
  2. Lipase, a fat-digesting enzyme that also originates in the pancreas and that shows the same clinical variations as amylase in disorders involving the pancreas.
  3. Acid phosphatase, an enzyme found in most body tissue but in unusually high concentration in the adult prostate gland; it is released into the circulation in metastatic cancer of the prostate.
  4. Cholesterol esterase is often used in determination of serum cholesterol levels.
  5. Creatine kinase, used in diagnosis of cardiac and skeletal malfunction.
  6. Uricase, used in determination of uric acid.
  7. Horseradish peroxidase utilizes a heme cofactor to catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide with the simultaneous oxidation of some other organic molecule. This ability to oxidize a wide variety of substrates means that horseradish peroxidase is very useful as a coupling enzyme. It can be used with enzyme reactions that result in the production of hydrogen peroxide, a powerful biotechnological tool.
  8. Glucose oxidase has proven to be one of the most useful enzymes known. It is the basis for glucose biosensors that are used for monitoring blood glucose levels of people with diabetes.
