Description
Shikimic Acid is a white crystalline powder that is soluble in water. It is an important metabolite of plants and microorganisms. Shikimic Acid has long been extracted from the dried mature fruits of Illicium verum.
Applications
Shikimic Acid is a key precursor in the synthesis of many alkaloids, aryl amino acids, indole derivatives and chiral drugs. Recently, Shikimic Acid has been used as a starting material for oseltamivir, the active ingredient in Tamiflu. Oseltamivir is a neuraminidase inhibitor and is used for the treatment and prevention of influenza A and influenza B.
