In vitro
Rapamycin can potently inhibit mTOR kinase with IC50 of 0.1 nM by binding to 12-kDa FK506- and rapamycin-binding protein (FKBP12, or FKBP) and the FKBP-rapamycin binding (FRB) domain of mTOR. Rapamycin is also an immunosuppressive drug. Rapamycin induced autophagy but not apoptosis in rapamycin-sensitive malignant glioma U87-MG and T98G cells by inhibiting the function of mTOR.
