This enzyme catalyses the following chemical reaction: ATP + N-acetyl-D-hexosamine → ADP + N-acetyl-alpha-D-hexosamine 1-phosphate. This enzyme is involved in the lacto-N-biose I/galacto-N-biose degradation pathway in the probiotic bacterium Bifidobacterium longum.
