MUGS is a fluorogenic substrate used in the diagnosis of GM2 gangliosidoses in leukocytes. Genetic defects in human b-hexosaminidase isozymes (Hex A & Hex B) result in various clinical and biochemical types of GM2 gangliosidosis (eg. Tay Sachs disease).
