Description
Myeloperoxidase (MPO), also known as peroxidase, is an important iron-containing lysosomal enzyme encoded in humans by the MPO gene located on chromosome 17. It is a lysosomal protein present in the aniline blue granules of neutrophils and released into the extracellular space during degranulation. MPO is more abundantly expressed in neutrophils and produces hypohalous acids with antimicrobial activity. MPO has a heme pigment that causes a green coloration of secretions in neutrophils. MPO deficiency is a genetic disorder that causes immunodeficiency in the body. Elevated levels of MPO greatly double the risk of cardiovascular death.
